Werner Herzog – Jannis Kounellis – Markus Selg
TRACES OF THE SUN
An apocalyptic opera
23. August – 25. October 2009

A stage production by Markus Selg
Curator: Oliver Zybok
“Spuren der Sonne – Eine apokalyptische Oper” moves on the interfaces between technology and nature, science and religion. The presentation takes the form of a mise-en-scène in the bunker setting and comprises a series of three-dimensional images created by Werner Herzog, Jannis Kounellis and Markus Selg. Four smaller chapel-like bunkers open up the spatial scenario which culminates in the three large bunkers.
These combine to create a kind of three-dimensional
winged altar, the central “panel” of which is formed by Herzog’s film “Lessons of Darkness”, whose music and narrative voice pervade all the rooms. The left-hand wing of the altar displays works by Kounellis, while the right-hand wing has a stage-installation by Selg. The show “Spuren der Sonne – Eine apokalyptische Oper” is a bleak vision, albeit brightly illuminated by the light of the beauty in which it unfolds.
